Ectoin Skincare
Ectoin is a naturally derived molecule first discovered in microorganisms that survive extreme environments such as salt lakes and deserts. In skincare, it draws water around skin cells to help protect them from stress, supporting the skin barrier and locking in hydration. Gentle enough for sensitive skin, ectoin skincare helps calm redness and dryness while defending against pollution and other environmental aggressors.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ectoin products
What is ectoin?
Ectoin (sometimes spelled ectoine) is a natural amino acid derivative known as an extremolyte. It was first found in bacteria that thrive in harsh conditions like intense heat, high salt levels and strong UV, where it acts as a protective shield for their cells.
Today, it's produced through a natural fermentation process and used in skincare, sun care and even some eye drops and nasal sprays thanks to its protective, hydrating properties.
What are the skincare benefits of ectoin?
Ectoin works by attracting water molecules and forming a protective hydration shell around skin cells. This helps to strengthen the skin barrier, reduce moisture loss and keep skin feeling comfortable for longer.
It's also prized for its soothing qualities, helping to calm redness and irritation, and for helping skin defend itself against environmental stressors such as pollution, dry air and sun exposure.
Is ectoin suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes. Ectoin is very well tolerated and is often included in formulas designed for sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin. It's a popular choice for anyone whose skin barrier feels compromised, whether from harsh weather, over-exfoliation or strong actives like retinol.
As with any new product, it's a good idea to patch test first.
Why is ectoin used in sunscreen?
Ectoin doesn't replace UV filters, but it's a valuable partner to them. Brands such as Bioderma and Ultrasun include it in their SPFs to help protect skin cells from the stress caused by sun exposure, adding an extra layer of defence alongside the sunscreen's filters.
What ingredients work well with ectoin?
Ectoin plays well with most skincare ingredients. It pairs particularly well with hydrators like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, and with barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides, niacinamide and panthenol.
Because it's so soothing, it's also a great companion to stronger actives like retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C, helping to offset any dryness or sensitivity.
How often can you use ectoin?
Ectoin is gentle enough to use every day, morning and night. You'll find it in everything from serums and moisturisers to sunscreens, eye care and even scalp and hair care, so it's easy to build into your routine wherever your skin needs extra comfort and protection.
