Created under Castelbel, Portus Cale traces its origins to 1999, when Aquiles Barros - then a long-serving chemistry professor at the University of Porto - was challenged to build a manufacturing unit focused on luxury scented soaps. Castelbel began production in 2000, and the brand’s story has continued to evolve through bold choices and steady growth. Portus Cale’s name is designed to reflect two cornerstones: “Castel-” from Castêlo da Maia in Greater Porto and “-bel” from “beleza” (the Portuguese word for beauty), tying the collection to both place and feel. In 2006 the company launched its own scented body care and home range, followed by the premium Portus Cale brand in 2007 - while continuing to produce aromatic soaps for respected partners worldwide.
