The reputation that Acqua di Parma enjoys today is wholly down to this particular fragrance. It was, after all, Colonia that first saw a small, artisan perfume factory from the Parmese old town garner international acclaim.
So iconic is the fragrance that the formula remains unchanged today. While the brand's perfumers continue to experiment with variants and lines that use Colonia as a base, they understand that this – the original – was a once-in-a-generation fragrance, which retains a timeless appeal some 80 years later.
The cologne is opened by top notes of lemon, sweet orange and Calabrian bergamot, which fall away into a heart that unites lavender, Bulgarian rose, verbena and rosemary. This is ultimately followed by the inimitable aromas of vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli.
